Personnel Psychology - Applied Projects
Training Program
We created a patient-focused care training for Labor and Delivery nurses at Sharp HealthCare. The project involved a training needs assessment, instructional design, and creation of training evaluation procedures. Our training program was structured as two half-day, in-person training sessions consisting of four modules. We designed training materials including handbooks for both trainees and the trainer, as well as the training program presentation. Training activities included brainstorming discussions, role-playing, case studies, and evidence-based activities.
Selection System Project
This project involved the design and testing of a selection system for an entry level Labor & Delivery Nurse for Sharp HealthCare. The proposed mixed-method multiple hurdle system produces the high-quality selection decisions at a low cost. Selection measures included in the battery consisted of a resume checklist, personality self report, structured interview, reference survey, and work sample. Newly developed assessments were tested and selection criteria were established according to organizational values and performance requirements.
Performance Appraisal Project
This project proposed a comprehensive performance appraisal system for evaluating Labor & Delivery Nurses. The performance measurement battery included a behaviorally anchored rating scale, a patient satisfaction questionnaire, and an objective measure of nursing outcomes which were algorithmically combined to produce an overall performance score. The appraisal battery assesses nurses on each key performance dimension twice and uses multisource feedback to produce robust, unbiased ratings.
Job Analysis Project
This project involved a job analysis conducted on the position of a Labor & Delivery nurse. Informed by research literature from personnel psychology, the analysis collected information from subject matter expert interviews, job listings, technical manuals, and nursing research. Using this data, we determined the key responsibility areas of L&D nurses, as well as the most important tasks, tools, and contexts involved in the position. Critical incident stories and the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for successful performance were identified and analyzed.
